The field of human–computer interaction has been evolving methods for ensuring the functionality and usability of end-user systems. Practitioners turn to researchers for help in choosing among these methods. Criteria such as efficacy, efficiency, simplicity, timeliness, and cost have been proposed as relevant bases for such choices (J. S. Olson & Moran, 1996). Comparative studies of methods have gained widespread attention and are often used to guide practice as well as the education of HCI professionals.
